A founder I worked with last year guessed his company was running three AI tools. We found nineteen. He is not the outlier. He is the pattern.
This week Veeam released the research that puts a number on the pattern. 95 percent of organizations have adopted AI. Only 31 percent have completed any AI related audit. That is a 64 point gap between the businesses using AI and the businesses that can actually tell you what AI is doing inside them.
Read that again. Of every hundred companies running AI right now, sixty four cannot answer the basic questions:
Which AI tools are running, including the ones nobody authorized
What data those tools touch
Who reviews the outputs before they reach a customer, a contract, or a financial filing
That is not a technology gap. It is a management visibility gap. And the cost of operating without that visibility is what the audits the 31 percent are running keep surfacing: duplicated subscriptions, shadow exposure, wrong tool productivity drag, lost procurement leverage. The companies I work with routinely find $80,000 to $250,000 a year in recoverable waste in the first thirty minutes of a free consultation.
This week's reporting also flagged something worse. Local AI agents now run directly on employee laptops, bypassing the monitoring the IT team installed three years ago. So even some of the 31 percent who ran an audit are not seeing the AI that matters most, the kind running on a device an employee owns.
The practical point is this. AI does not stop being your problem because you have not audited it. The risk accrues either way. The 31 percent are not the cautious ones because they are paranoid. They are the cautious ones because they want to be the company that can take a closer look later, when a regulator, an insurer, or a board asks where the AI is and what it is doing.
